Tokaj

The town of Tokaj has already existed in the Middle Ages. We have written records form the 11th century, but the town probably already existed at the time of the Hungarian occupation of the Carpathian Basin. In older written documents the town was referred to as Kőrév/stony port or Hímesudvar (a reference to the fort of Tokaj that used to stand on the island and was destroyed by II. Ferenc Rákóczi in 1704).

The town has a rich cultural heritage. You can learn more if you visit the muesums of the town (www.tokajimuzeum.hu) or take part in a nice guided stroll through town (https://tokajiseta.hu).

Vinegrowing and winemaking have been an essential part of Tokaj’s history, and UNESCO put the region on the world heritage list in 2002.

The Tokaj region is truly remarkable regarding its winemaking history. It made its first aszú wine (a rare natural botrytis wine) centuries ago in the 1500s. It had a classification of vineyards before anybody else in the world, based on quality. It has fantastic native varieties, great and varied wine categories so anyone can find something to their liking from dry and sparkling, to sweet and botrytised. You can learn about the culture and taste these wines if you visit the local cellars. See our recommendations, best to make an appointment in advance.
